Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
